Be An Ocean Hero, Not An Ocean Zero This Summer – #NoMoreButts·
There are no more excuses for marine litter this Summer. No More Butts.
Riding the wave of the March For The Ocean and World Oceans Day, The TerraMar Project has teamed up with TerraCycle to help end cigarette butt pollution.
The problem is enormous: 2.3 million cigarette butts are polluted every single minute around the world, where 1 in 10 will reach a body of water.
Go to any beach and the problem is in plain sight. According to the 2017 International Coastal Cleanup, cigarette butts were the number one most commonly found litter item.
Cigarette butts can seriously harm wildlife and contribute to our global plastic pollution crisis. The butts are made of cellulose acetate, a plastic which persists in the environment. Butts also emit cadmium, lead, arsenic and zinc into water and soil as they decompose and have been found in fish, birds, and sea turtles who mistake it for food.
So how can we turn the tides against the unfathomable amount of cigarettes polluting our coasts?
Enter TerraMar x TerraCycle with a two-fold approach:
- Change the norm with #NoMoreButts. Cigarette butt pollution is the only socially acceptable form of littering – 65% of cigarette butts are littered. Through a well-designed social media campaign that is spearheaded by everyday ocean-lovers, the world can bring this number down to 0%.
- Let the world know that they can actually RECYCLE cigarette butts.
Anyone can join TerraMar’s #NoMoreButts campaign and spread the word to their social network that cigarette butt littering ends today. There are no more excuses for marine pollution of any kind, and together we can amplify our voices into a tidal wave of opposition by signing up for the campaign at:
Once people understand that cigarette butt litter needs to end, the next step is to recycle all of this waste! Enter TerraCycle:
TerraMar has teamed up with TerraCycle to make it simpler than ever to recycle your cigarette butts. Any #NoMoreButts member can email [email protected] to receive a free shipping label, and mail in their butts to be recycled at TerraCycle’s facility. Participants can check back weekly to see their collective impact.
“Summer is here and we think of long lazy days spent at the beach. But it’s sad how disrespectful people can be to coastlines during this critical time for marine life.” – says Brian Yurasits, Director at The TerraMar Project.
“The tiniest of shorebirds fly halfway across the world to nest on our beaches. And massive whales migrate North, as they follow the fish. Yet we allow our coasts to drown in items like cigarette butts, beer cans, and plastic coffee cups which choke the ocean. Animals have enough problems to deal with, and litter doesn’t need to be one of them. It’s a social norm that needs to change today. There are No More Excuses for marine pollution, #NoMoreButts.”
We urge individuals and businesses to join this recycling program, and to play an active role in helping others around them participate.
“#NoMoreButts isn’t a campaign aimed just at smokers, it’s aimed at every single person who can learn to treat our beaches better this Summer. And we don’t want to criticize smokers either. We just want them to litter less, that’s what this is really about. No more butts means no more excuses for this epidemic problem, and everyone can participate.” – Brian Yurasits.
So what are you waiting for? Take the pledge for #NoMoreButts this Summer and challenge the people around you to step up this Summer and become an ocean hero!
The TerraMar Project is a global community of ocean citizens dedicated to taking local actions to promote conservation. Begun in 2011, TerraMar focuses on campaigns that have an outstanding impact on the ocean. TerraMar helped spearhead the campaign to have the oceans included in the United Nations Sustainability Development Goals (2015). TerraMar offers free education lessons, has a free digital newspaper that covers oceans and rivers world-wide, and supports local citizen science efforts – it takes a global voice to support and call for change.
TerraCycle is the world’s leader in the collection and repurposing of complex waste streams, ranging from used cigarette butts to coffee capsules to ocean plastic. The waste is collected through free manufacturer-funded programs, as well as Zero Waste Boxes that are purchased by end users to recycle in homes, offices, factories and public spaces. The collected waste is turned into a variety of raw materials that are sold to manufacturers to produce new products. Each year, across 21 countries, TerraCycle collects and repurposes billions of pieces of waste, donating millions of dollars to schools and charities in the process.
