When it comes to bans on single-use plastic, success lies in design.
You can help support a plastic bag ban in New York, following a proven formula which works in California, Oregon, Washington, New Jersey, and Connecticut:
Banning thin plastic bags while placing a fee of 10 to 25 cents on paper or reusable bags.
This strategy of adding a fee to paper bags works more effectively than a simple ban on plastic bags because it prevents unintended shifts in consumer choices. For example without a fee, consumer choices shift to rampant use of paper bags or possibly even thicker plastic bags.
In New York, you can help Surfrider Foundation support Senator Kaminsky’s bill, S 95, which follows this proven formula.
