NEVER share your specific location on Instagram if you’re adventuring outdoors – it can harm wildlife.
For decades surfers and fishermen have kept their favorite spots secret by implementing a code of LOCALISM (locals only). If you break the code by sharing the location with friends, and you’re kicked out forever.
And for the most part, this has helped keep these places clean and protected for wildlife.
But today, we live in an ULTRA CONNECTED world thanks to social media.
Influencers on social media have the ability to destroy our oceans by promoting MASS TOURISM to vulnerable locations. When people see someone who they look up to visiting a marine ecosystem, they are inclined to go. One person doesn’t hurt, but multiply that by thousands and it makes a serious difference.
Pave your own path and find your own special natural places. As an adventurer, it’s far more rewarding to discover a place yourself, and to keep it secret.
You have to earn access to these special places. Of course it’s crucial to Opt Outside and experience nature, but you need to earn it by respecting nature and the other people enjoying it alongside yourself.
Nature has no place fr city-slickers who drive up to a secluded natural place with their pool floats, grills, stereos, and coolers – leaving most of their trash behind. Those of us who appreciate our favorite natural spots need to prevent these masses from flooding what little special places are left on this Planet.
Surfers and fishers are notoriously good at keeping their spots secret, but it’s time for the rest of the outdoor world to pick up this habit!
AVOID THE LOCATION TAG TODAY, AND USE SOMETHING WITTY OR FUNNY INSTEAD!
Some alternative suggestions:
- Nunya Business
- Use a general location tag (ex: city, country)
- Planet Earth
- Something comical
