Calling all Florida residents, it’s your time to take action to protect the ocean!
If you haven’t already heard, the state of Florida is trying to prohibit its municipalities from creating both plastic straw bans, and bans on toxic sunscreens.
That’s right, they’re “banning bans” that are being put in place to help the marine environment!
What would the Bill do?
Lawmakers argue that there needs to be more research done to examine the impact of plastic straws, and sunscreens on ocean ecosystems. And to examine the limitations that they pose to peoples with disabilities who need straws to drink.
And so they’re aiming to limit the power of municipalities to regulate these products for the next 5 years until more is known.
Simply put, it’s obvious that plastics are choking our coasts and oceans. And anyone who has ever participated in a beach cleanup can attest – there are tons of straws scattered across our coasts.
And many personal care products – like sunscreens – contain toxic chemicals (Oxybenzone being just one example) to both ocean and human life. We know this already.
Five years is a long time to continue polluting our oceans, especially when we need immediate action to protect our world’s marine environments.
What you can do
If you’re a resident of Florida, you can contact Governor DeSantis at (850) 717-9337 and ask him to veto HB 771.
Anyone can help by saying no to single-use plastics like plastic straws in your everyday life!
